6 Ways to Become Known as an Expert in Your Field

Why might you want to get known as an expert in your field? People who are experts benefit in many ways.  

  • People prefer to work with experts.
  • You'll attract more prospects and it will be easier to convert more of them into clients (customers, patients, consumers.)
  • People tend to known, like, and trust experts more quickly and easily.
  • You're easier to find online and off.
  • People are willing to pay higher fees for your services, and accept that you charge by the project or results rather than by the hour. 

These are just a few reasons it's important to do what it takes to earn the status of expert.  

So let's jump into what you can do to achieve this coveted position.

  1. Become a member of a Credibility Cluster. What's a Credibility Cluster? A group of people who are already known as experts in their field or aspire to be who work together. A credibility cluster is more than a mastermind group. Members comment on each other's blog posts, contribute to a group blog, quote each other in articles, retweet each other's tweets, interview each other and more.
  2. Implement a Social Media Marketing campaign. Social Media Marketing covers a lot of territory and can integrate several different social media marketing tools. Here are a few to consider using: create pages and profiles with pictures on social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, to name a few;) writing a blog and commenting on other people's blog; create videos for your website and YouTube; turning your expertise into intellectual property, also known as information products, and marketing articles, podcasts, videos, and more.
  3. Interview experts in your industry. One of the easiest and quickest ways to do this is by interviewing experts in your industry. There are celebrity-caliber experts in every industry that members of that industry would be eager to hear speak and would gladly pay for that privilege.

    One of the benefits of this strategy is that the "celebrity factor" of interviewing experts rubs off on you. You become known as a Big Name in your industry. You can use the interviews as a lead generation strategy, and your name gets out to thousands in your target market in a big way.

  Donna Gunter has done an excellent job of presenting 10 steps you can follow to  help you become your industry's leading expert in 30 days by conducting expert interviews in her blog post.  

  1. Get interviewed by others. With traditional broadcast, satellite, and internet radio and TV, there are plenty of people looking for people to interview. Why not you? You can do an Internet search and discover shows you'd like to be on, and then contact the show host.
  2. Become a speaker. If you like, or think you might like standing in front of a group of strangers, this is a powerful way to let people know you're an expert in your field. Organizations in your neighborhood are always looking for speakers. Become an engaging, interesting, and "edutaining" (educating + entertaining) speaker, and make an Irresistible Offer. You'll attract clients and additional speaking engagements. Even if initially you speak for free, stick with it. The possibilities are exciting.
  3. Turn your knowledge, wisdom, and expertise into information products. Create text, audio, video or multi-media infoproducts and use them to promote yourself. They're a great source of passive, residual income with a great profit margin. That's in part because there are free and low cost tools you can use to create these products, lots of information on these and how to use them, plus many of people who can teach you or do the work for you. The same is true for the methods of automating delivery of your products online.

Some of you may be thinking that these ideas are quick, simple, and easy to implement. Success is not instant pudding. Implementing any of the above methods takes time and effort.

Yet implementing one or more of these strategies has the potential to elevate you to the status of expert in your field. So roll up your sleeves and let your creativity soar.
